Nocturne Paintings From the Summer of 2016

The last few years I’ve started painting many nocturne paintings from life. Which of course means staying up late! Sometimes till 1 or 2 in the morning. These are all paintings from 2016. It’s actually a nice time to paint. Usually very quite. And of course the light doesn’t change! Often I go back theContinue reading “Nocturne Paintings From the Summer of 2016”

Solomons, Maryland Outdoor Painting Event

I did two plein air competitions in the summer of 2014. One, in Castine Maine, which  I wrote about previously. The second one was in Solomons, Maryland, which is an appealing town on the Chesapeake Bay in Southern Maryland. It had a little bit the feeling of my area in Maine – a seasideContinue reading “Solomons, Maryland Outdoor Painting Event”

Castine, Maine Outdoor Painting Event

Here is an overdue post.  But perhaps with spring only 3 weeks away, thoughts of summer are now  becoming more realistic. This was a wonderful painting event that I did in July of 2014,  in a gorgeous town just a few hour drive from my home in Rockland, Maine. Castine is quite an interesting placeContinue reading “Castine, Maine Outdoor Painting Event”

Chiostro di Michelangelo, Terme di Diocleziane (The Cloister of Michaelangelo, Baths of Diocletian), Roma, 10 x 8 in, Oil

This was another landscape painting outing with the Sketchcrawl Roma group. Again they had arranged free admission! A couple of us stayed the whole day and then were thrown out by surprised gaurds when they decided to close a little early. They thought everyone was gone ( it was a Saturday evening – I understood).Continue reading “Chiostro di Michelangelo, Terme di Diocleziane (The Cloister of Michaelangelo, Baths of Diocletian), Roma, 10 x 8 in, Oil”

Behind Castel Sant’Angelo, Roma, 5 x 7 in, Oil

I did this landscape painting in a very pleasant little park behind The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant’Angelo (English: Castle of the Holy Angel),  which  is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano, Rome, Italy. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family.Continue reading “Behind Castel Sant’Angelo, Roma, 5 x 7 in, Oil”

Veduta del Foro Romano (View of the Roman Forum), 5 x 7 in., Oil

I did this landscape painting looking south over the Roman Forum ruins in Rome,Italy. It was a busy spot with tourists until I spilled my mineral spirits on the ground ( accidentally, really!) and then people stayed away from me. The Roman Forum ( Italian: Foro Romano) is a plaza surrounded by the ruins ofContinue reading “Veduta del Foro Romano (View of the Roman Forum), 5 x 7 in., Oil”

Acquedotti di Roma (Roman Aquaduct) , 5 x 8 in. Oil

This is the second   landscape painting I did at the  Parco degli Acquedotti (Park of the Aquaduct), which  is a public park in Rome, Italy. It is part of the Appian Way Regional Park and is of approximately 15 hectares. Although just 8 km from the center of Rome, the park has been protected from developmentContinue reading “Acquedotti di Roma (Roman Aquaduct) , 5 x 8 in. Oil”
