I was in Palermo this June where I painted The Church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio or San Nicolò dei Greci, commonly called the Martorana, overlooking the Piazza Bellini in Palermo. The foundation charter of the church (which was initially Eastern Orthodox) is preserved and dates to 1143; construction may already have begun at this point. The church had been completed by 1151.

At one point painting this I was totally surrounded by a school group, jeering encouragement:
