The beautiful Santo Spirito in Sassia (Holy Spirit in Saxony) is a 12th-century  church in Rome. It stands in Borgo Santo Spirito, a street which got its name from the church. It was just a short distance from the Vatican and about a mile away  the apartment I had  in in Rome. The church stands on the site of King Ine of Wessex’s Schola Saxorum, or “Saxon School”, a charitable institution for Saxon pilgrims. It was rebuilt in the 12th century.
