Recent Paintings 9/23

Here’s a selection of paintings completed recently. ( Above: Blue Accent, 8 x 10 or 20 x 25 cm, oil on paper.)

Ever since my spring travels in the Mediterranean this year with only water media for painting, I’ve been thinking about oil paint’s textural qualities. And trying to use more paint. A couple of these paintings exhibit that quality. A ragged brush is key!

Sunflower Reverie, 10 x 10″ or 25 x 25 cm, oil.

I’ve been working on this painting above since last spring. I kept on putting it aside and revisiting the portrait in frustration. A painting like this is more similar to a still life. It doesn’t say much of anything, except “I’m Decorative.” Paintings can be a lot of things, but at the base they really are wall decoration. And they do a great job of it!

Blue Accent, 8 x 10″ or 20 x 25 cm., oil.
A process shot of this painting. I was actually standing in an abandoned gas station while I did this.
Drift Beach, Port Clyde, Maine, 8 x 12″ or 20 x 30 cm, oil.

Right before I painted this painting, I went for a brief swim at this beach. It’s pretty much only at the end of the summer that the water is warm enough for a casual swim in Maine.
