Plein Air Magazine Italy Trip Article

In July of 2013, when I was still in Naples, Italy, Steven Doherty, the editor of Plein Air Magazine contacted me about doing an article on my trip to Rome. Unfortunately it was only published in the subscription - only digital edition, but I'm very pleased with the article. They graciously allowed me to repostContinue reading "Plein Air Magazine Italy Trip Article"

Back From Italy and New Daily Painting Auctions

I'm back from Italy, alas. I had a wonderful time and even visited France and Paris, where I liberally sampled the wine and enjoyed some wonderful meals! And I'm plotting my Italian return! Also there are still many paintings, photos, and memories  to post from Naples and Sicily and I'm busy finishing those and documentingContinue reading "Back From Italy and New Daily Painting Auctions"

View of Saubrigues, Aquitaine, France

Here is a sketch I did for my friends who I visited in SW France in July 2013.

Pulcino Della Minerva (Bernini”s Elephant), Roma, 10 x 8 in., Oil

I did this cityscape  painting over two days at the Piazza della Minerva in Rome, Italy, one block behind the Pantheon, which you see in the background. This  is one of the most curious monuments of Rome, the so-called Pulcino della Minerva. It is a statue designed by the Baroque era sculptor Gian Lorenzo BerniniContinue reading "Pulcino Della Minerva (Bernini”s Elephant), Roma, 10 x 8 in., Oil"

Chiesa di Santa Brigida, Oil, 8×10 in.(Sold)

This painting was done on a cool March night on the Piazza Farnese. My biggest audience were the waiters running back and forth to their storeroom and murmuring words of encouragement: "bella, bella!" This is the Chiesa di Santa Brigida, a small Swedish church dedicated to Saint Bridget of Sweden, who travelled to Rome inContinue reading "Chiesa di Santa Brigida, Oil, 8×10 in.(Sold)"

Meeting Other Landscape Painters or Sketchers When You Travel

By far the best part of my  trip to Italy to paint and learn about the culture,  has been the local painters and fellow artists I met here. How did I find them? Well actually the first thing I did is google "plein air Rome" until I found the blog of a transplanted U.S. painter,Continue reading "Meeting Other Landscape Painters or Sketchers When You Travel"

Plein Air Painting at Trajan’s Column

Above: Trajan column 8 x 8" or 20 x 20 cm., oil. I did this landscape painting in Rome, Italy on a day painting with a few of my Roman plein air friends. It's near the busiest tourist area, and luckily several good spots for inexpensive espresso and pizza were nearby. Trajan's Column (Italian: ColonnaContinue reading "Plein Air Painting at Trajan’s Column"

Chiostro di Michelangelo, Terme di Diocleziane (The Cloister of Michaelangelo, Baths of Diocletian), Roma, 10 x 8 in, Oil

Another landscape sketching event with the "Sketchcrawl Roma" group that I went on was at the wonderful Chiostro di Michelangelo. This is a group of Roman artists that meets monthly to sketch somewhere in the Eternal City. And as they often had, they arranged free admission! A couple of us stayed the whole day andContinue reading "Chiostro di Michelangelo, Terme di Diocleziane (The Cloister of Michaelangelo, Baths of Diocletian), Roma, 10 x 8 in, Oil"

Ponte Sant’ Angelo di Notte, Roma (Saint Angels Bridge by Night), 8 x 10 in. Oil

This is a night painting I did in Rome, Italy of the Ponte Sant'Angelo.  Completed in 134 AD to span the Tiber, from the city center to  the towering Castel Sant'Angelo.  The bridge is now solely pedestrian, and provides a photogenic vista of the Tiber River and the castle. It's of course a busy place, andContinue reading "Ponte Sant’ Angelo di Notte, Roma (Saint Angels Bridge by Night), 8 x 10 in. Oil"
