Pulcino Della Minerva (Bernini”s Elephant), Roma, 10 x 8 in., Oil

I did this cityscape  painting over two days at the Piazza della Minerva in Rome, Italy, one block behind the Pantheon, which you see in the background. This  is one of the most curious monuments of Rome, the so-called Pulcino della Minerva. Chiesa di Santa Brigida, Oil, 8×10 in.(Sold)

This painting was done on a cool March night on the Piazza Farnese. My biggest audience were the waiters running back and forth to their storeroom and murmuring words of encouragement: “bella, bella!” This is the Chiesa di Santa Brigida, a small Swedish church dedicated to Saint Bridget of Sweden, who travelled to Rome inContinue reading “Chiesa di Santa Brigida, Oil, 8×10 in.(Sold)”

Trajans Column, Rome, 8 x 8 in., Oil

I did this landscape painting in Rome, Italy on a day painting with a few of my Roman plein air friends. It’s near the busiest tourist area, and luckily several good spots for inexpensive espresso and pizza were nearby. Trajan’s Column (Italian: Colonna Traiana) is a column in Rome, Italy, that commemorates Roman emperor Trajan’sContinue reading “Trajans Column, Rome, 8 x 8 in., Oil”

Chiostro di Michelangelo, Terme di Diocleziane (The Cloister of Michaelangelo, Baths of Diocletian), Roma, 10 x 8 in, Oil

This was another landscape painting outing with the Sketchcrawl Roma group. Again they had arranged free admission! A couple of us stayed the whole day and then were thrown out by surprised gaurds when they decided to close a little early. They thought everyone was gone ( it was a Saturday evening – I understood).Continue reading “Chiostro di Michelangelo, Terme di Diocleziane (The Cloister of Michaelangelo, Baths of Diocletian), Roma, 10 x 8 in, Oil”

Ponte Sant’ Angelo di Notte, Roma (Saint Angels Bridge by Night), 8 x 10 in. Oil

This is a night painting I did in Rome, Italy of the Ponte Sant’Angelo.  Completed in 134 AD to span the Tiber, from the city center to  the towering Castel Sant’Angelo.  The bridge is now solely pedestrian, and provides a photogenic vista of the Tiber River and the castle. It’s of course a busy place, andContinue reading “Ponte Sant’ Angelo di Notte, Roma (Saint Angels Bridge by Night), 8 x 10 in. Oil”

Parco degli Acquedotti (Park of the Aquaduct), Roma, 8 x 10 in., Oil

The Parco degli Acquedotti (Park of the Aquaduct) where I did this  landscape painting is a public park in Rome, Italy. It is part of the Appian Way Regional Park and is of approximately 15 hectares. Although just 8 km from the centre of Rome, the park has been protected from development and retains a rusticContinue reading “Parco degli Acquedotti (Park of the Aquaduct), Roma, 8 x 10 in., Oil”

Fabricus Bridge, Roma (Isola Tiburina), 8 x 10, oil

This is a cityscape painting of the  Fabricus Bridge, which I painted right before I left Rome. The Pons Fabricius (Italian: Ponte Fabricio, meaning “Fabricius’ Bridge”) is the oldest Roman bridge in Rome, Italy, still existing in its original state. Built in 62 BC, it spans half of the Tiber River, from  the east shore ofContinue reading “Fabricus Bridge, Roma (Isola Tiburina), 8 x 10, oil”

Veduta del Foro Romano (View of the Roman Forum), 5 x 7 in., Oil

I did this landscape painting looking south over the Roman Forum ruins in Rome,Italy. It was a busy spot with tourists until I spilled my mineral spirits on the ground ( accidentally, really!) and then people stayed away from me. The Roman Forum ( Italian: Foro Romano) is a plaza surrounded by the ruins ofContinue reading “Veduta del Foro Romano (View of the Roman Forum), 5 x 7 in., Oil”
