La Martorana, Palermo, Sicily
I was in Palermo this June where I painted The Church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio or San Nicolò dei Greci, commonly called the Martorana, overlooking the Piazza Bellini in Palermo. The foundation charter of the church (which was initially Eastern Orthodox) is preserved and dates to 1143; construction may already have begun at this point.ContinueContinue reading “La Martorana, Palermo, Sicily”

I’m spending late fall in Rockland, Maine. BRRRRR!. SOLD. Available for purchase. This work is unframed, but it isContinueContinue reading “Rockland Harbor, Maine, November, 6 x 6 in., oil (sold)”
Chiesa Rossa, Ortygia Island, Syracusa, Sicily
Here is a nice viewpoint from the ramparts around Ortygia island in Sicily which I painted. I don’t have any information about this church (besides a name) . If anyone knows, I’d love to know. It looks very old when I walked around it. Also, here is a aerial view of Ortygia, with the volcanoContinueContinue reading “Chiesa Rossa, Ortygia Island, Syracusa, Sicily”

Here is a great view of the end of Ortygia island in the city of Syracuse, Sicily. Syracuse is a pleasant place, very cleaned up compared to most of Italy. It is also the home toContinueContinue reading “Ortygia Sunset, Syracusa, Sicily”
Reverse Graffiti
I love this concept – graffiti created by removing dirt. Just to be clear, these practitioners are removing the dirt, not applying anything. It’s a wonderful idea and a poignant statement about the condition of our world. Businesses have also been using it for advertising. Of course if you have ever written “wash me” onContinueContinue reading “Reverse Graffiti”

Plein Air Magazine Italy Trip Article
In July of 2013, when I was still in Naples, Italy, Steven Doherty, the editor of Plein Air Magazine contacted me about doing an article on my trip to Rome. Unfortunately it was only published in the subscription – only digital edition, but I’m very pleased with the article. They graciously allowed me to repostContinueContinue reading “Plein Air Magazine Italy Trip Article”
