La Martorana, Palermo, Sicily

I was in Palermo this June where I painted The Church of Santa Maria dell’Ammiraglio or San Nicolò dei Greci, commonly called the Martorana, overlooking the Piazza Bellini in Palermo. The foundation charter of the church (which was initially Eastern Orthodox) is preserved and dates to 1143; construction may already have begun at this point.ContinueContinue reading “La Martorana, Palermo, Sicily”

Chiesa Rossa, Ortygia Island, Syracusa, Sicily

Here is a nice viewpoint from the ramparts around Ortygia island in Sicily which I painted. I don’t have any information about this church (besides a name) . If anyone knows, I’d love to know. It looks very old when I walked around it. Also, here is a aerial view of Ortygia, with the volcanoContinueContinue reading “Chiesa Rossa, Ortygia Island, Syracusa, Sicily”

Chiostro di Michelangelo, Terme di Diocleziane (The Cloister of Michaelangelo, Baths of Diocletian), Roma, 10 x 8 in, Oil

Another landscape sketching event with the “Sketchcrawl Roma” group that I went on was at the wonderful Chiostro di Michelangelo. This is a group of Roman artists that meets monthly to sketch somewhere in the Eternal City. And as they often had, they arranged free admission! A couple of us stayed the whole day andContinueContinue reading “Chiostro di Michelangelo, Terme di Diocleziane (The Cloister of Michaelangelo, Baths of Diocletian), Roma, 10 x 8 in, Oil”

Behind Castel Sant’Angelo, Roma, 5 x 7 in, Oil

I did this landscape painting in a very pleasant little park behind The Mausoleum of Hadrian, usually known as Castel Sant’Angelo (English: Castle of the Holy Angel),  which  is a towering cylindrical building in Parco Adriano, Rome, Italy. It was initially commissioned by the Roman Emperor Hadrian as a mausoleum for himself and his family.ContinueContinue reading “Behind Castel Sant’Angelo, Roma, 5 x 7 in, Oil”
